Ozone generators with no secrets

12/06/2022

Recently, we have seen a significant increase in interest in the topic of ozonation and the possibilities of disinfection with ozonators. To a large extent, this is the result of the Covid-19 pandemic that has prevailed for over two years. Previously, no one really thought about disinfecting rooms. And although, for many years, ozone generators have been commonly used, for example, in hospitals, they are a kind of novelty for a wider group of people, and the ozone treatment itself raises many questions and doubts.

How ozone is formed

Ozone is a gas that occurs naturally under certain atmospheric conditions. To simplify things, it can be said that ozone (O3) is a form of oxygen (O2). It is most abundant in the higher parts of the atmosphere and is produced by the action of UV rays. However, these processes take place quite far from the surface of the Earth and beyond our supervision. The controlled and safe extraction of ozone is possible thanks to ozone generators which produce it from the commonly occurring oxygen. Why control and safety in the ozone production process are so important will become clear as we learn about the properties of ozone.

What properties does ozone have?

It is a blue gas with a rather characteristic smell. But what we are more interested in is the fact that ozone is a strong oxidant and affects other organic substances, which is why it has the ability to act quickly and fight unwanted microorganisms. Ozone has been recognized as one of the most effective disinfectants for many years. For safety reasons, it is important that ozone is a non-flammable gas, easily soluble in water. In a relatively short time, it decays spontaneously to form oxygen (which can be considered both its advantage and disadvantage).

Which gives ozonation

Ozone generators are becoming more and more popular due to the possibilities offered by the gas they produce. The ozonation process allows for the effective removal of bacteria, viruses, mold, fungi and other microorganisms and pathogens. As a result, the use of an ozonator can significantly contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of people with allergies. Ozone also deals with deodorization, i.e. it effectively removes unpleasant odors.

Where ozonation is used

As we mentioned earlier, ozonators have been used in medical facilities for many years. In the current epidemic situation, ozonization is regularly applied not only to hospitals and operating rooms, but also to ambulances and vaccination centers. Virtually any room can be ozonated. More and more often hotels, restaurants and private apartment owners decide to use this type of disinfection.

The automotive industry is also very familiar with ozonation. Most of us have certainly heard of such a service as ozonation of car air conditioning. Here, a particularly important role is played by the fact that ozone is in the form of a gas (a volatile substance), which makes it easy to reach all nooks and crannies of each installation.

The ozonation process also applies to water. Ozone is used to treat drinking water and is increasingly used to keep swimming pools clean. And although it did not replace the use of chlorine that is harmful to the skin in its entirety, it limited its use.

Ozone generators have been used for many years and in many industries. Ozone treatment is provided to offices, hospitals, factories, production workshops and sports facilities, as well as food.

Is ozonation safe?

As mentioned earlier, ozone is a gas that occurs in nature and we come into contact with it. However, it should be remembered that many applications of ozone, including disinfection, are due to the fact that it is a gas that, in high concentration, adversely affects all organisms. It can be said that the harmfulness of ozone is our ally in the process of effective disinfection and disinfection, because thanks to this we get rid of bacteria, fungi and microorganisms.

Ozonators are devices that are used for the controlled production of ozone. If we use them with the required precautions, ozone disinfection is safe for humans and environmentally friendly. The source of oxygen necessary to generate ozone is freely available air. No chemicals are used in the ozonation process. Ozone itself, as already mentioned, is a gas that decomposes spontaneously into oxygen, leaving no secondary waste, and is therefore often referred to as the "green chemical".

Basic safety rules during ozonation

First of all, no people or pets are allowed in the ozonated room (it is also recommended to remove plants). After the ozonation process is completed, wait 2-4 hours, it is the time needed for the generated ozone to decompose spontaneously into oxygen particles. Most often, it is also recommended to ventilate the room before using it again. Each time, you should follow the guidelines of the equipment (ozonator) manufacturer, who should provide precise instructions for using the ozonation device.

What to look for when choosing an ozonator

The ozonator is an increasingly popular device, and the market offers many models of these devices in a huge price range. When choosing, we suggest that you first pay attention to the parameter that tells you what amount of ozone is produced for a given time unit (most often given in g / h) and the achieved efficiency (expressed in m3 / h).
